Hiyo!
Had a fantastic trip to Maine with Ellen, Sara, and Erik. We snuck up there on Thursday from Boston and came back on Monday. It was a short trip but my batteries feel good and recharged! Here’s a sketch of the cabin -

Sending love to everyone -

Weekend Celebration

Had myself a very chilled out, peaceful weekend. Here’s a sketch I did while slamming some coffee and Slim Jims -

Lost somewhere near Twin Peaks.

Here’s the view from my lawn chair stationed inside my car. It was raining off and on, so I had to setup camp in there -

I changed a lot of proportions to make it fit better to the page.

BUT THEN I GOT A FLAT TIRE ON A STEEP HILL.

It was the fist one I’ve ever had to change. But it went ok! I drove back home over the Bay Bridge and incredibly, everything stayed attached.

After I got it changed, I met up w/ my friend Josh and Eryn and they showed me my new favorite place in San Francisco -

We ate tacos, too. Good spot! Lots of love and thanks to the Lovich’s for showing me what’s up and saying hello. Hope we meet again very soon.

ALSO – I added a store to the site! It currently only has a brick and a cinder block for sale (just testing – don’t get excited – they’re not actually for sale), but I’m hoping to get some super secret and amazing original paintings and prints on there soon. And rubber stamps. Just wait! It’ll be great.

Love to everyone! Thanks for stopping by and saying hello.
Adios,

LEGO MOC Madness Building Contest

Good day!
This is a LEGO ship I made for FBTB.net’s MOC Madness 2011 Building Tournament. It’s a bit weird looking, but someone’s gotta have an awkward ship in outer space.

Check out all of the amazing entries on the site! Great stuff.
Excited to see all u old friends and family in the upcoming holidays!
Much love,

Fleet Week 2011

It’s Fleet Week!!! I spent my weekend outside taking it all in. The Blue Angels started at 3 on Saturday and you could see everyone in the city collectively smiling and turning their heads as the planes went by. The RCAF Snowbirds Jet was really amazing too. I did this drawing as the Blue Angels were going around -On Sunday, the show was supposed to continue but there was fog all around the city. I scooted over to Sausalito in anticipation of more planes, but all I got was one quick fly-by from the Blue Angels before they left due to the heavy cloud cover. But right after they left, the fog lifted and you could see all the way to the city! I did this drawing, but was sour the whole time because there were no planes above me.
That’s all for now! Much love to everybody out there and thanks for stopping to say hello.

Good Morning

Greetings! I scooted up Mt. Diablo today.
I had to carry all the painting stuff on my back. The drive up was amaazing and I was giggling like a school girl the whole way cuz it was so pretty. Once I’d scooted up the whole 3,000 feet to the summit, I turned around and stopped to try and make a painting. It came out kinda nasty but I learned a lot. Deer came to see me while I painted!!! And everything was covered in amazing light all day. As I was packing up I started hearing coyotes! It was spooky and I left.

Next week I’m off to Maine with Ms. Ellen O’Reilly and friends and am hoping to make lots of stuff. So come back and see, please!

Until then,

Pig Newton

Greetings, friends!
Here’s some recent drawings. Ever since the Primos Parilla food truck disappeared (right) and stopped serving delicious Argentinean food to my neighborhood I’ve been very, very upset. Felt the need to include them in this little sketchbook homage as a thanks for the best chicken of all time. They’re the truck with the little “RIP” beneath it. Very sad, but I will never forget them or their mushed up green stuff that tasted to good with my chicken. That third truck up from the bottom is the Chairman Bao truck, and I just learned that the graphics on it were designed by James Jean! I had always liked them, and this would explain why. Also did a drawing on Haight street (bottom) and the other one’s looking at the Ferry building on Embarcadero (left). Did one of Chinatown, too, but it sucked and my hands were freezing so I’m not posting it because it’s nasty looking.

How are you doing? Hopefully very well. I miss anyone and everyone that’s not here right now and hope this is finding you well!!!
Much love!

I CAN SEE ALL OBSTACLES IN MY WAY

Good evening!
Wanted to share a few drawings. Got a new set of watercolors that has me even more confused than usual and have also been trying pen instead of pencil. No matter what, having a lovely time making whatever mess I wind up with.
These two are the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and Fort Mason.
Sending much love to everyone out there and hoping everyone had a fantastic weekend!!!

Fare thee well,

GORGES

Greetings all -
Headed over to Aurora, NY this weekend for a family funeral. Could have been a sad gathering, instead it was beautiful and great seeing everybody. Also lovely to to wish my mum a Happy Mother’s Day in person. Aurora is right on Cayuga Lake and I’d almost forgotten how amazing that area of New York is. Here’s my doodle:Sadly, Grandma passed away, but being with everyone else that loved her was the best way to say goodbye. Mostly I consider myself privileged for getting a solid 25 years of my life with her. Here’s a picture of her:
And last, here is a jam I created this past week on mah computer. It’s called “LOL”. I named it LOL because all of the drum fills are my favorite and make me giggle every time I listen to this.

And some more!

Greetings!
Here are a few sketchbook pages. Loosened up a lot with these and subsequently made a pretty spectacular mess. I want to get outside more often while autumn is here and it still smells and feels so superb. Leaves crunching under my shoes and ‘pumpkin’ being a flavor at every restaurant. Perfection.

Miss everyone and very excited to see family & friends on these upcoming holidays!
Until we meet again,

MODOK

This month’s work challenge said: ‘Draw a comic book villain’. I’m not well-versed in comics, so I did a bit of Googling until I ran into… MODOK!
Still not sure what this guy is from, but I’ve learned that his name stands for: “Mental organism designed only for killing.” Perfect.

Take good care, friends!

AFOL

Hiya friends -
Lovely holiday weekend brought me over to Dolores Park to do this doodle on the 4th. My drawing doesn’t do it justice, but the scene was crazy with hordes of guys running around in speedos and everyone trying to sell me a very special cookie.

In other news, I <3 LEGO. I've been a fan forever, but recently stepped up my game with organizational bins and a tackle box to sort the tiny pieces. NBD.

Here’s a little number I assembled while watching “The Men Who Killed Kennedy” series on Netflix.

Force be with you,

Today is the Greatest Day I Have Ever Known…Can’t Live For Tomorrow.

Fantastic weekend helping pals move into glorious new homes and getting shamefully drunk at the North Beach Festival. Did this quick drawing as the sun was going down and the residents of San Francisco were cooling off. Summer is just the best. Good seeing you, as always, Bobbie Fenner.
Wishing everyone all the best of everything,

These are some sights from around San Francisco. Enjoy!

Rock? "r-o-k"?

Pulled out my phone again and tried to paint -
And here’s the video:

iPhone Chipotle Painting from Robb Gibbs on Vimeo.

Drawing on the tiny screen is really hard, but I think it also helps to force good painting habits on me. For example, I constantly have to zoom way out from the image so that I can get a sense of the whole composition. I liken this to standing up and stepping back from an actual canvas.
Painting on the phone also makes me use as big of a brush as possible for each spot on the screen. As soon as I start to fiddle with something really tiny, I wind up with a bunch of noisy scratches that just distract or go unnoticed in the bigger picture. I think the phone is also making me establish a decent method for attacking an image since I can’t get too complex with layers or selection edges or nothin.
In this piece, I’m not sure if it’s the value structure, composition or the colors (or maybe a bit of all three) that bother me most. But next time I sit down, I want to focus on pushing the light areas on top of the dark areas on top of the light areas on top of the dark areas . . . etc, etc . . . Really concentrate on layering and exaggerating my values. I also want to figure the composition out a bit more w/ a thin brush so it’s not such a happy/unhappy accident as I progress through the piece. This one got a little weird and I wound up just slapping on some bright colors in an attempt to separate foreground elements from stuff behind them!
Still, it’s a good time trying to make images in a painter-ish way rather than my usual pencil/watercolor-wash-attack method.
Hope you all are doin real nice and that we’ll meet again soon!

Happy trails -
X O X O X O
